TIPS FOR TRUCK DRIVERS TO REMAIN ALERT

As a truck driver, you have a responsibility to avoid fatigue and remain alert. You might also have a demanding schedule that can leave you feeling fatigued. Although there are many rules and regulations in place to help you avoid exhaustion and the impaired driving it causes, you can still suffer from it, even while you operate within the established guidelines. If you are serious about your safety and of the other drivers around you, there are still steps that you can take to avoid the dangers associated with chronic fatigue.

Rules about Sleeping. As a truck driver, below are the minimal regulations for sleeping and shift work that you must follow:

  • A driver may drive no more than 11 hours of every 14 hour shift, if they have been off-duty for 10 or more hours. Remember, the 14 hour shift includes time spent on stops.
  • If you have been on duty for a total of 60 hours during seven consecutive days, you need to cease driving. Furthermore, you may not drive if you have been on duty for a total of 70 hours over eight consecutive days. You may start the count over again only after 34 hours of off duty time.
  • If you are using a sleeper berth, then you must spend at least 8 hours of consecutive time in the berth. You must also take an additional 2 hours off duty either in or out of the berth.

TEN WAYS TO REDUCE EMPLOYEE STRESS

Worker stress levels have increased within the past few years as the economic downturn has led to layoffs, heavier workloads, a higher percentage of workers taking second jobs to make ends meet, and declining household incomes, due to family members’ lost wages.

In a recent “Stress in the Workplace” survey by Buck Consultants (www.buckconsultants.com), more than four in five participants (82%) reported that employee stress has a significant or moderate impact on their company’s healthcare costs. A large majority of respondents also said that stress has had a significant or moderate impact on absenteeism (79%) and on workplace safety (77%).

In response to rising employee stress levels, many employers are taking steps to help their workers manage stress. According to the Buck Consultants survey, 66% of participants have implemented four or more programs to reduce on-the-job stress, while 22% have at least eight programs in place.

The survey listed these Top 10 stress-reduction strategies:

  • Employee assistance programs (78%)
  • Flexible work schedules (63%)
  • Work/life balance support programs (46%)
  • Leadership training on worker stress (45%)
  • Online healthy lifestyle programs (45%)
  • On-site fitness centers (43%)
  • Physical activity programs (38%)
  • Stress awareness campaigns (35%)
  • Financial management classes (32%)
  • Personal health/lifestyle management coaching (29%)
  • The more effective these programs, the lower the stress on your workers – which adds up to higher productivity and a healthier return on investment.

Farmers Seek More Renewable Energy

Innovative farmers have been producing renewable energy using byproducts such as walnut hulls and methane for years, and their efforts to earn credits from utility companies for some of that energy could soon become easier.

A bill passed by the Legislature would allow farmers to connect on-farm renewable-energy systems together and then connect them to the grid. Previously, only solar, wind and fuel cell generators have had a streamlined path to connect.

Theft Prevention Tips While On Vacation

Make your home looked “lived in” even when you’re not there!
Have a trusted neighbor pick up your mail and newspapers.
Arrange for someone to mow your lawn or shovel snow.
Ask a neighbor to park a car in your driveway while you’re gone.
Never advertise your absence by taping a note to your door or announcing it on your answering machine/voice mail.

Turn your telephone ringer down or off. This way a burglar is less likely to hear the ringing of unanswered calls and realize no one is home.

You can add to the security of your lighting system and cut your electric bill by installing a motion detector on outside lights. This will activate your lights when anyone comes within range of the unit’s motion sensor.

The Difference Between Whole Life and Term Life

The biggest difference between Whole Life Insurance and Term Life Insurance is the length of time you are insured for. With Whole Life Insurance you are insured for your entire life. With Term Life Insurance you are insured for a specified period of time, that expires by a certain age (usually 75) and if you have not died there is no payout. Some sound Whole Life Insurance advice is to explore both options carefully.

Whole life premiums are higher than term life; however, you are also covered for your entire life. With term life each time the term renews the premiums go up so in the end it costs more than whole life. Some good Whole Life Insurance advice is to compare premium rates between different providers.
