The agricultural insurance market is facing rising demand along with pressures to adapt to changes in farming and to become more efficient in delivering products.
Increasing world demand for food is driving up commodity prices for corn, soybeans, wheat and other food staples. At the same time, the U.S. farming economy is strong, the federal crop insurance program is being changed and today’s farmers are getting bigger and adopting new technologies.
These and other trends promise to affect crop insurance, farmowners and agribusiness insurance, creating challenges as well as opportunities for insurers that develop more sophisticated insurance products and work hand-in-hand with agribusinesses and farmers.
The U.S. has long enjoyed the least expensive food in the world with just 6.2 percent of Americans’ average income spent on food. In China, the average is 32.9 percent of income. This illustrates a need to decrease the cost of food per capita and increase the standard of living in other parts of the world.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has reported that demand for corn has pushed U.S. supplies to their lowest point in 15 years. A recent Associated Press story blamed projected corn futures orders from the ethanol industry and noted that low supplies of other food staples from wheat to coffee are contributing to the upward surge in world food prices. The United Nations food agency has warned that a severe drought in China is also expected to drive wheat prices higher.

Many Americans are unfortunately becoming aware of the increasing problem of auto theft, vandalism and how it affects your insurance rates. Every 27 seconds a car is stolen. It is estimated that at least 1 million cars will be stolen this year alone. Auto theft affects your insurance premiums so much so that there are instances where individuals living in certain locations are unable to even secure a regular auto insurance policy because of the risk of vehicle theft.
It’s bad enough that someone would vandalize or steal your car. To make matters worse, you will be the one who ends up paying increased policy rates. You should also know that if you own a car that is considered by auto insurance companies as being high risk for theft, you could pay higher rates as well.
What kind of theft coverage do most standard auto insurance policies cover anyway?
Comprehensive Coverage
Automobile theft is covered by your automobile insurance policy’s comprehensive coverage. If you are paying for comprehensive insurance coverage, you are paying rates determined by the likelihood of your car being stolen. Your auto insurance company will also review the car theft rates in your area, and whether your car’s make and model is frequently targeted by thieves.

A four-passenger airplane based out of Watsonville crashed into Watsonville Community Hospital about 7:30 p.m. Thursday, killing four people, according to Fire Chief Mark Bisbee.
Witness George Benson said he saw the plane take off and said the pilot appeared to be trying to clear the fog line.
Benson, a Watsonville pilot, was in the industrial park adjacent to the Watsonville Municipal Airport. He said the single-engine light brown Mooney was a four-seater.
“He (the pilot) was heading toward the coast and tried to climb,” Benson said. “From the time he took off, he was going too steep, too slow.
“He spun to the left and you can see where the impact was,”Benson said standing in the hospital parking lot looking at the tail of the charred plane sticking out of the building, debris strewn across the parking lot.
“He didn’t have any time for recovery,” Benson said, suggesting he’d have used the cross runway. The airport has two runways, laid out like a “t”.
Fog typically rolls in over South County during the summer, settling in as night falls, often causing issues for pilots taking off from the airport. The National Weather Service confirmed there was normal bay fog settling in the area Thursday night.
Airport manager Don French said there were no special advisories and it was a normal Central Coast foggy day. But the tenured pilot said it was an unusual place for an airplane to be and not the “usual flight path.”
“It’s never as simple as it appears to be,” said French, who’s set to retire after four decades.
French said he couldn’t identify the passengers but could confirm the plane is local.
According to the tail number, the plane is registered to David Houghton, listed as a principal at A+ Environmental Solutions, an environmental sciences and engineering firm in Santa Cruz. It’s not clear whether he was on board. The co-owner was listed as Chester Belknap, also of Santa Cruz.
