How Can A Higher Deductible Save You Money In The Long Run?

Homeowners insurance in California, is a necessity when it comes to buying a house. In fact, most mortgage companies will not finance a real estate transaction unless you provide proof that you have the proper coverage for most if not all of the property you intend to purchase.

Over the next few weeks, Scurich Insurance Services would like to give you a few tips when it comes to purchasing homeowners insurance as well as some cost saving ideas that can actually help reduce your insurance costs.

This week we will be taking a look into how a higher deductible can save you money in the long run.

The following Article was taken from: MSN Money

“Did you know you can shave hundreds of dollars off your annual homeowners insurance bill by increasing your deductible? We don’t mean just going from $500 to $1,000. Think big. Already have a $2,500 deductible? Then think bigger. Think $100,000.

“We have clients with deductibles of $100,000 fairly routinely on $5 million homes,” says Mary Boyd, a senior vice president and the chief operating officer for ACE Private Risk Services. Some ACE clients with multiple homes and a “significant” net worth have deductibles in the millions of dollars, she says. What do they know that you don’t?

When you choose a deductible, you’re picking a number you’re willing to spend out of pocket if you suffer a loss. It should certainly cover what you think of as run-of-the-mill outlays, those incurred when calling the insurer would be more of a hassle than writing a check to the repairman. But if you’re comfortable with paying even more in the event of a loss, you can save a lot of money on premiums in the long run.

How much might you save with a higher deductible? On a house insured for $1 million with a $2,500 deductible, a homeowner could save $1,000 a year by going to a $10,000 deductible at ACE. (The premium and savings will vary depending on the house’s location and other factors.) Since the homes ACE insures statistically suffer a loss only about once every 20 years, this is a very good bet, says Boyd.”

Calling All Pet Owners!

The following article was taken from: Watsonville Patch

“Calling all pet owners: In honor of World Spay Day 2013, Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter (SCCAS) and Friends of Watsonville Animal Shelter (FOWAS) will offer free spay or neuter surgeries for resident dogs, cats and rabbits.

The SCCAS has two locations, one at 2200 7thAvenue in Live Oak and one at 580 Airport Boulevard in Watsonville.

Registration will be available on Sunday, Feb. 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Animal owners don’t have to bring their pets to register, but must bring proof of residence in Santa Cruz County. There’s a limit of two pets per resident.

The goals of the program, according to the SCCAS, are to help reduce the County’s homeless animal population, as well as help pet owners comply with current laws, which state that dogs and cats over six months old must be spayed and neutered.

All surgeries are performed at our Santa Cruz shelter location by a licensed veterinarian with a professional focus on spay and neuter procedures.

Surgeries include a preoperative exam by a veterinarian, pain medication and dissolvable sutures.

To receive the free spay or neuter surgery, SCCAS provides and requires a rabies vaccination (if not current), a microchip, a dog license (if not current), and a blood panel test if the animal is over seven years of age. These fees are a minimum of $35.”

Insurance Discounts Anyone?

Homeowners insurance in California, is a necessity when it comes to buying a house. In fact, most mortgage companies will not finance a real estate transaction unless you provide proof that you have the proper coverage for most if not all of the property you intend to purchase.

Over the next few weeks, Scurich Insurance Services would like to give you a few tips when it comes to purchasing homeowners insurance as well as some cost saving ideas that can actually help reduce your insurance costs.

This week we will be taking a look into the different types of discounts you can receive when it comes to your homeowners insurance policy.

You’re probably familiar with the basic discounts that most insurance companies offer on Homeowners coverage, such as bundling Home and Auto insurance, loyalty rewards, and installing smoke detectors and/or home security systems.

However, a growing number of companies offer significant premium discounts on Homeowners insurance to policy holders who are:

  • Senior citizens. If you’re 60 or older, you could lower your premium by as much as 15%.
  • Non-smokers. If you’ve given up the habit — or have never picked up a cigarette, cigar, or pipe — you might qualify for a discount.
  • Married couples or widows/widowers. Could be eligible for discounts of up to 5%.
  • New buyers who have closed a home purchase within 60 days.
  • Willing to increase coverage to reflect a rise in inflation.
  • Ready to buy coverage for the full value of a home.
  • Prepared to buy from a new carrier before the policy with your current insurance company expires.
  • New policy holders with the company (the “welcome” discount) and purchasing coverage for the entire value of your home.

You might also be eligible for a discount if you don’t have a Property damage claim for a specified period, such as three years.

Bear in mind that many insurance companies might not offer some (or any) of these discounts.

To see if you’re eligible for any of these policies simply check with the professionals at Scurich Insurance Services located in Watsonville, California. We might be able to save you some big dollars.

What Will Your Reward Be?

It’s Friday and Scurich Insurance Services located in Watsonville, California would like to help you unwind for the weekend with this week’s joke of the week.

One day a fisherman was lying on a beautiful beach, with his fishing pole propped up in the sand and his solitary line cast out into the sparkling blue surf. He was enjoying the warmth of the afternoon sun and the prospect of catching a fish.

About that time, a businessman came walking down the beach, trying to relieve some of the stress of his workday. He noticed the fisherman sitting on the beach and decided to find out why this fisherman was fishing instead of working harder to make a living for himself and his family.

“You aren’t going to catch many fish that way,” said the businessman to the fisherman, “you should be working rather than lying on the beach!”

The fisherman looked up at the businessman, smiled and replied, “And what will my reward be?”

“Well, you can get bigger nets and catch more fish!” was the businessman’s answer.

“And then what will my reward be?” asked the fisherman, still smiling.

The businessman replied, “You will make money and you’ll be able to buy a boat, which will then result in larger catches of fish!” “And then what will my reward be?” asked the fisherman again.

The businessman was beginning to get a little irritated with the fisherman’s questions. “You can buy a bigger boat, and hire some people to work for you!” he said.

“And then what will my reward be?” repeated the fisherman.

The businessman was getting angry. “Don’t you understand? You can build up a fleet of fishing boats, sail all over the world, and let all your employees catch fish for you!”

Once again the fisherman asked, “And then what will my reward be?”

The businessman was red with rage and shouted at the fisherman, “Don’t you understand that you can become so rich that you will never have to work for your living again! You can spend all the rest of your days sitting on this beach, looking at the sunset. You won’t have a care in the world!”

The fisherman, still smiling, looked up and said, “And what do you think I’m doing right now?”

Second Harvest Raises 3.6 Million Pounds of Food in Holiday Drive

The following article was taken from: Watsonville Patch

“Over the holidays until Jan. 15, locals contributed food to Second Harvest donation centers around Santa Cruz County.

Their goodwill paid off.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Cruz County raised 3.6 million pounds of food for its holiday food drive, Development Director Steve Bennett Thursday.

“Volunteers have been sorting the food and our 200 member agencies have begun distributing it to hungry people throughout Santa Cruz County,” said Bennett, pointing out that the food will be enough to feed people through March — a period when need is the greatest.

The money raised through the drive will be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables to supplement the non-perishable items, said Bennett.

The need for food aid in Santa Cruz County is up 38 percent, according to Second Harvest, which feeds 55,000 people in Santa Cruz County each month.”
