Replacement of Hwy 1 Median Barrier

As seen in: Santa Cruz Live 7/11/2012 By Ramona Turner

There have been many questions raised as to why Cal-Trans replaced a concrete center divider on Hwy 1 between State Park Drive and Rio Del Mar Boulevard with another concrete center divider in the same location. Cal-Trans has made a statement saying that over the past 10 years Hwy 1 has been repaved numerous times to maintain a smooth road surface. With the surface of the road rising as a result of repaving the height of the barrier has decreased in size over the years making it unsafe for drivers, especially those with larger vehicles.

The old barrier was a type 50 and 32 inches high and the new barrier is a type 60 and is 36 inches high. The height of this new barrier will allow HWY 1 to have more overlays before it will have to be replaced with a new one.  This means that this new concrete center divider that was put in will be able to be around for quite a bit of time before it will no longer be safe for divers.

Scurich Insurance Services cares about your safety while you are diving this summer. Contact any of the helpful and friendly agents at Scurich Insurance Services today with any questions regarding your auto insurance policy.

Workers Compensation Insurance Request

What is Worker’s Compensation?

Each state has its own workers’ compensation laws to handle claims from employees who are injured on the job. These laws are strict liability – fault and negligence by the employer are not considered in order to collect benefits. Punitive damages are not available to the employee. The legal defenses available in a civil action such as comparative negligence and assumption of the risk are not available to the employer in workers’ compensation.

However, the injury or illness has to be incurred in the course of employment in order for the workers’ compensation system to provide benefits to the injured worker. Workers’ compensation is generally the exclusive remedy for an employee’s injuries or illnesses arising out of the course of employment. It is typically required by the state for every employee – although state law may provide for specific exemptions for officers/owners, small companies (those with three/four/five or fewer employees), domestic workers, farm hands, and independent contractors.

Fill out the form below and one of our helpful and friendly agents at Scurich Insurance Services will contact you to answer any of your questions about your worker’s compensation insurance policy!

COMMERCIAL AUTO INSURANCE: ALL POLICIES ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL!

To help you make sure make sure that your business has the right Commercial Auto policy at the right price, we’d recommend following these guidelines:

Make sure to cover all vehicles that your employees drive on company business. This could include vehicles that employees own, lease, or rent – as well as those that the company owns.

Determine whether you need Personal or Commercial Auto insurance. You might be able to save money by covering vehicles with a less expensive Personal Auto policy in some situations — for example, by registering title to a vehicle in your name. However, if the company owns the vehicle, you’ll need Commercial Auto coverage. Bear in mind that a Personal Auto policy should include the contents of the vehicle, as well as medical costs if a driver suffers an injury on company business.

Be sure to comparison shop. Because every insurance company sets Commercial Auto premiums and coverages in its own way, prices (and values) can vary significantly. Because we represent a variety of companies, we can offer professional advice on finding a policy that’s tailored to your needs — and pocketbook. Just give us a call.

Senate Rejection of Amendment to Further Cut Crop Insurance Program

Surich insuranceAs seen in: Property Casualty 360 6/20/2012 By Arthur D. Postal

Last month the Senate rejected a particular amendment to the farm bill S. 3240 that “…would have stripped the Federal Crop Insurance Program (FCIP) budget baseline by $5 billion, leading to a 37 percent reduction in Administrative and Operating (A&O) funds, and would have reduced the overall program cap to $825 million.”

The Administrative and Operative funds was used partly to pay to pay the agents commissions of the agents upon the sale of crop insurance. The cut that was proposed would have been on top of  additional cuts that have already been made.

Industry officials have been quoted at saying, “At a time when farmers are being asked to rely on crop insurance even more as their primary risk management tool, it seems irresponsible to further deplete the crop program of its critical resources,” according to Charles Symington, senior vice president of government affairs for the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America.”

Going Green in Small Ways

As seen in: The Washington Times 5/24/2012 by Michele Lerner

There are many different ways that you can redo your home’s interior to make it more eco-friendly with either big or small projects around your home.  One of the first things that you can do while beginning one of these  these home renovation projects is to locally obtain or purchase your materials or reuse materials that you already may have around your home.  Local products are anything that you can get within 500 miles from your place of residence.

Here are a few different eco-friendly ways that you can update your home:

  1. You can recycle and update furniture and other items you have around your home that have sentimental value to you to give them a whole new appearance.
  2.  Reusing furniture for another use is another good way like making a kitchen table into a coffee table or bedroom dresser into an entrainment center
  3. Using products like reclaimed wood (if coming from a local source), IceStone, Terrazzo is considered to be eco-friendly because they are all products made from recycled material

Any questions regarding what is covered in your  home insurance policies while completing some of these projects and many more around your home contact the Scurich Insurance Services today!
