Bryan Stow Talks for First Time Since Opening Day Attack

Scurich Bryan Stow, the Live Oak father and Giants fan who was severely beaten outside Dodger Stadium on March 31, has spoken his first words since the attack, according to his family.

When a relative held up photographs of his children Wednesday, Stow said, “I would like to see them.” He also told his sisters that he loved them.

Stow, 42, was attacked outside Dodger Stadium on March 31 after the Opening Day game between the Dodgers and Giants. His head hit the ground, and he suffered a severe skull fracture. He’s been hospitalized at San Francisco General since May, after a life-saving procedure in which part of his skull was removed to relieve pressure from his swollen brain. About a week ago, doctors put a shunt in Stow to help divert excess fluid from his brain.

Hospital employees told the family Wednesday that Stow had his speaking valve on his tracheostomy tube and was able to say his first and last name when prompted by a speech therapist. The therapist also asked Stow his daughter’s name, and he was able to say both her nickname, Tabby, and her full name, Tabitha.

He also was able to tell the therapist his son’s name and his own birthday.

“We are encouraged by Bryan Stow’s continued neurological improvement and can report that he is beginning to talk again,” Dr. Geoff Manley, chief of neurosurgery at San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, said in a release issued Thursday. “However, he remains seriously injured

Vehicles Burn, But Wildland Fire Quickly Extinguished

Scurich InsuranceA fire in the hills above Corralitos destroyed several vehicles and spread into the surrounding brush Friday afternoon, but was quickly contained, CalFire reported.

The fire was reported just after 1 p.m. near 1936 Eureka Canyon Road. The area was described as both a field and a parking, about 100 square feet and was surrounded by a road. It’s about six miles up the hill from the Corralitos fire station.

Ground crews, helicopters and an air tanker were called in but the firefighters on the ground were able to handle the fire, according to emergency radio traffic.

A CalFire official said three or four vehicles were consumed in the blaze. CalFire crews extinguished the fire within 30 minutes, the CalFire official said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The area where the small fire sparked has been ravaged by wildfire in recent years, motivating residents to be vigilant about possible fires and proactive about preventative measures, such as creating defensible space around their homes. “Thank you” signs dedicated to firefighters are a permanent fixture in the rural, farming area.

Are You Protected From Hurricanes?

Hurricanes are one of nature’s largest and deadliest kinds of storms. These giant storms usually form during the warmer spring and summer months, and can have a profound effect on human lives and property. A hurricane forms over warm water, and changes in water temperature and air pressure cause it to grow in size and strength. The most recent tragic hurricane, Katrina, was one of the worst in United States history. In order to properly understand and prepare for how to deal with a hurricane, one must know the science behind them and preparation tips.

Scurich Insurance understands that sometimes it is harder to protect yourself from natural disasters than what it seems that why they want you to have these tips to help you stay safe! It is essential to stay safe during a hurricane, and there are several things people can do to be prepared. First, make sure your car has plenty of gasoline in the event of a mandatory evacuation. Prepare a hurricane readiness kit with a flashlight, handheld radio, plenty of batteries, prescription medication, fresh water, and non perishable food. Expect power to be out in your area for several days, if not weeks. Flooding is also a possibility so find out about your home’s insurance policy. Always have ice and food available to you in the event of an emergency storm. Stay away from windows and glass, and away from objects that can fall on top of you. Remain calm, and have an exit plan or a plan of what to do next in the event that a hurricane strikes your area. Speak with your homeowners insurance agency to see if they have a comprehensive guide available to help better prepare you and your home.

If you haven’t checked your Home Insurance coverage levels lately, now’s a good time to do it.

Car Theft, How Does It Effect Your Insurance?

Many Americans are unfortunately becoming aware of the increasing problem of auto theft, vandalism and how it affects your insurance rates. Every 27 seconds a car is stolen. It is estimated that at least 1 million cars will be stolen this year alone. Auto theft affects your insurance premiums so much so that there are instances where individuals living in certain locations are unable to even secure a regular auto insurance policy because of the risk of vehicle theft.

It’s bad enough that someone would vandalize or steal your car. To make matters worse, you will be the one who ends up paying increased policy rates. You should also know that if you own a car that is considered by auto insurance companies as being high risk for theft, you could pay higher rates as well.

What kind of theft coverage do most standard auto insurance policies cover anyway?

Comprehensive Coverage

Automobile theft is covered by your automobile insurance policy’s comprehensive coverage. If you are paying for comprehensive insurance coverage, you are paying rates determined by the likelihood of your car being stolen. Your auto insurance company will also review the car theft rates in your area, and whether your car’s make and model is frequently targeted by thieves.
