Tony is married with 3 children, graduated from Watsonville High in 1977 and Santa Clara University in 1981. Current activities include running at Rio Del Mar Beach & West Cliff Drive, biking, cooking/BBQing, reading biographies and eating breakfast burritos at Pixie Deli. Past and present community activities include board member of St Francis High School, Pajaro Valley Historical Association, YMCA (board member and youth basketball coach), Boy Scouts of America and, Pajaro Valley Chamber of Commerce (board chair in 2004).

When people hear the term life insurance or permanent life insurance most people think primarily of death benefits. What about life insurance as a life planning strategy?
It’s been done. People, ordinary people with a dream, made it happen. And not only was their strategy to benefit themselves but it also benefits us today. And just to name a few:
- Walt Disney. In the 1950’s, after his television show became a huge success, he funded (with his life insurance cash value) his dream of a place where parents and kids alike could come and have good, clean fun. That place is called Disneyland.
- In 1939, a young couple had a dream of owning a farm with chickens and turkeys. That couple had borrowed $1,000 off their life insurance policy for a down payment on a farm. - As a milkman, Ray Kroc was more interested in hamburgers. He contacted the McDonald brothers, Dick and Mac, about a successful hamburger stand he saw in San Bernardino, Ca. The McDonald brothers were interested in franchising nationwide. In 1955, Ray Kroc opened his first McDonald’s in Illinois and by 1961 he bought out the McDonald brothers. Today, McDonald’s is internationally known and there are more than 30,000 locations.
These everyday people took a chance and it changed their lives (and ours too!).

Slips, trips, and falls (STFs) in the workplace are all too common – and a single accident can cost you thousands in medical payments and lost productivity.
To help businesses reduce STFs, Brian Roberts, Director of Workers Compensation and Ergonomics for CNA Insurance, has developed this six-point strategy, based on Japanese workplace practices:
- Sort. Organize and straighten the workplace to make sure that aisles and walkways are free of trip and fall hazards.
- Set in order. Analyze the efficiency of motion and workflow on the job (for example, review employee walking patterns and chart the results).
- Shine. Eliminate all forms of contamination – such as dirt, fluids, or liquids – that could cause bone-breaking slips. This includes assessing floor surfaces for wear and pitting, and “transition points” (from concrete to tile, tile to carpet, carpet to marble, etc.) and eliminate or alter them. Make sure that you have the right floor cleaning products and that your maintenance staff understands how to use them properly, if they have limited English skills.
- Standardize. Organize the workplace by prominent postings of such “visual management” tools as signs and warnings of potential STF hazards.
- Keep lights clean. Dusty and dirty lights obscure lighting conditions, which increases the risk of STFs.
- Sustain. Maintain the progress that you’ve achieved through the other strategies in order to make these improvements systemic and long-lasting.
