Insuring Your Watercraft in California: What You Need to Know

boatsOne of the best things about living in California is the gorgeous climate. It makes getting out and enjoying the outdoors an everyday occurrence. Considering how much water is available to residents in the state, combining your outdoor adventures with a boat, jet ski or wave runner brings a whole new level of fun to your life. Before you make arrangements to put your watercraft to good use, though, you need to make sure that you are covered in the event of an accident.

California Watercraft Laws

Each person who is on board a watercraft must be wearing a life jacket that has been approved by the Coast Guard. The approved types are Types I, II, III and V. Operating a personal watercraft such as a jet ski is prohibited between sunset and sunrise even if the craft is outfitted with the correct navigational lights. Only individuals that are aged 16 and older can operate a boat that is more than 15 horsepower unsupervised. Children between the ages of 12 and 15 can do so under the direct supervision of a person who is over the age of 18. There are also specific stipulations against negligent and unsafe behavior while operating a watercraft.

Insuring Your Watercraft

It is safe to assume that you need specialized insurance for your watercraft before you take it out to play. Rather than simply purchasing a cookie cutter insurance plan, however, work closely with your insurance agent to craft a customized insurance package that meets your unique needs. In most cases, this insurance plan will include liability in case you accidentally damage someone else’s property or cause injury to another person. Collusion and comprehensive insurance is also a standard addition and protects your own boat and other watercraft in the event that it is damaged.

Summer is a Good Time to Evaluate Your Insurance Coverage

Scurich Insurance Services, CA, SummerPeople are more active when the weather gets warm. They participate in more sports and recreational activities. Do you have the right type and amount of insurance to be well protected against all of the things that can go wrong?

During the winter there are not as many boats out on the lakes and waterways. When summer comes around, the level of recreational boating increases exponentially. If you own a boat or a jet ski and are planning on taking it out of storage and into the water, you need to buy insurance. You pretty much have all of the same risks when you operate a boat as you have when you operate a car. If you run your boat into a pier, insurance can cover the repairs. If your boat is stolen you will not suffer a huge financial loss. Most importantly, a boat insurance policy can cover valid liability claims should you cause property damage or personal injury to another person while operating your boat.

When the weather is good and the kids are out of school, people tend to drive more. They go to amusement parks, the beach and on family vacations. The roads are more crowded and you may want to have more than your state’s minimum required amount of automobile insurance. If you don’t already have it, consider adding collision, comprehensive, roadside service, towing, and rental car reimbursement to your auto policy.

People get more active when the weather is warm. Whether you are out surfing, playing soccer, hiking, or riding a bike, you could fall and get injured. If you break an arm or need medical attention for some other reason, it is important to make sure that you are covered by medical insurance.

Most summer activities are just fun and work out just fine. However, for those cases when the unexpected happens, you will be glad you bought insurance.

Stay safe on the water

Scurich Insurance Services, CA, Boat SafetyEveryone wants to hit the water now that summer is here.  Pontoons, kayaks, sailboats, motorboats, and the like can be found everywhere.  As with everything, safety measures need to be in place before your boat hits the water.

  • Pay attention to the weather before you head out.  No one likes to get caught in a storm.  And certainly no one wants to be on the water in a thunderstorm.
  • Do you have the proper equipment for your guests and your boat?  For boats with engines make sure you have enough gas for a roundtrip.
  • Don’t overload your boat.  I know it’s going to be hard to keep your guests at a minimum, but if you don’t everyone can be swimming.
  • Have lifejackets for everyone.  Sure they are big and bulky, but they’ll save lives.
  • Don’t drink and boat.  Be the designated boater of the party.  Everyone will thank you for it.
  • Pay attention.  I’m sure you wouldn’t want anyone to run into you and the best way to avoid that is by paying attention, cause someone else might not be.

If you are heading out on the water this summer, you need to make sure you are fully insured.  Most homeowners insurance policies won’t cover boating incidents.
